Denmark’s CO2 Energy Efficiency (COOEE) project intends to increase the energy efficiency of Denmark’s roads by decreasing their vehicles’ resistance to motion, called rolling resistance. Pavement texture is one factor in this resistance. The COOEE project is expected to save $101 million, 12.5 million gallons of fuel, and 45,000 tons of CO2 yearly with re-engineered roadways.
Transtec engineers profiled various pavement surfaces in Denmark using the Transtec robotic laser profiler, RoboTex. This texture profile data is capable of creating 3D images of pavement surfaces—COOEE will use the data in a comprehensive pavement-tire interaction model to determine surface characteristics that best improve the energy efficiency of their roadways.
